New Forest Ponies
The New Forest Pony is a recognised breed of pony and is indigenous to the New Forest, Hampshire. It is a popular family pony owing to its endearing and gentle disposition which makes it suitable for children and small adults alike. Local people do occasionally race the ponies and they have proved themselves to be fast and sure footed time and time again. But the New Forest pony is certainly not a one-trick pony and can turn a hoof to a range of equestrian disciplines including pony club, driving, dressage and showing, to name but a few.
There is no lower height limit for a New Forest pony but they are not there is an upper height limit of 14.3hh. When shown they are often split into two height categories, 13.3hh and under and 13.3 - 14.3 hh.
A registered pony may be any colour with the exception of skewbald, piebald, spotted or blue-eyed cream. Additionally, it is not possible to register a palomino or light chestnut pony as a stallion. White markings on the head and legs are not permitted. These restrictions are in place to ensure the pure and true characteristic of the New Forest Pony continue.
The New Forest pony has a free, even movement, with a well built and ample frame, muscular hind quarters and a good depth of body. The temperament is friendly and the ponies are noted for their intelligence, strength and versatility.
It has been said that, of all the British native breed ponies, the New Forest is the most approachable owing to their frequent contact with humans over the years, perhaps to a greater degree than other breeds such as the Dartmoor or Highland, for example.
